A richly illustrated account of one of the landmark achievements of nineteenth-century polar exploration: Nordenskiöld’s expedition aboard theVega, which accomplished the first successful navigation of the Northeast Passage.
Departing Scandinavia in 1878, the expedition traveled along the northern coast of Eurasia, wintered near the Bering Strait, emerged into the Pacific in 1879, and continued through Japan, China and Southeast Asia before returning to Europe through the Suez Canal. The book’s own abstract records a total voyage of22,189 English geographical miles.
Particularly compelling is the extensive documentation ofSiberia and the Chukchi people. Numerous illustrations depict Chukchi men, women and children, facial tattooing and tattoo patterns, clothing, implements, snow travel and other aspects of material culture. These ethnographic illustrations are among the most visually striking portions of the book.
The volume also contains a remarkable range of expeditionary and scientific material, including illustrations of thecrew and officers of the Vega, expedition scientists, Arctic landscapes, the aurora, snowshoes and reindeer travel, mammoth remains, marine specimens, Arctic flora and zoology. The return voyage broadens the geographical scope still further, with material relating to Japan, China, Southeast Asia and Ceylon.
Among the particularly memorable illustrations areChristmas Eve aboard the Vega, the expedition crew, paired portraits of Chukchi people, St. Lawrence Island tattooing patterns, the aurora at the winter quarters, and natural-history subjects collected or observed during the expedition.
