DescriptionThe Stationery: An official business envelope for the Northern Pacific R.R. Co., specifically the \"Asst. Gen. Manager\'s Office\" in New Tacoma, W. T. (Washington Territory).
The Stamp: A 2-cent brown George Washington stamp (Scott #210), which was issued in 1883.
The Postmark: A circular Railway Post Office (R.P.O.) cancel. It appears to read TACOMA & PORT. R.P.O. (Tacoma & Portland), dated OCT 28, 1884.
The Address: Sent to \"Mr. B.H. Grover, Care N.P.R.R. [Northern Pacific Railroad], Portland, Ore.\"
Special Note: The \"W.T.\" (Washington Territory) designation is crucial. Washington did not become a state until 1889, making this a Territorial cover.
New Tacoma: The use of \"New Tacoma\" is a specific historical marker. The \"New\" was eventually dropped, but at this time, it was a burgeoning railroad hub.
R.P.O. Usage: This was cancelled on a moving train. Territorial R.P.O. cancels are a specialized and highly collected area of philately because they document the exact routes used to settle the frontier.
