"THE DETROIT FREE PRESS,"
Detroit, Mich.
1886
FIRST (and only) EDITION
A fascinating window into the domestic life of late nineteenth-century America, The Free Press Economy Cookbook and Manual of Housekeeping was created for the practical homemaker determined to manage a household with skill, thrift, and efficiency. Published in 1886 by the Detroit Free Press, this substantial volume gathers hundreds of carefully selected recipes alongside invaluable advice on every aspect of household management. It is completely and thoroughly illustrated throughout with many diagrams showing parts of animals, kitchenware, and serving, and there are several pages of many fish illustrations so there is no confusion at the local market. It even has lovely detailed and artistic full page renderings which is so unusual for a practical housekeeping guide.
Written during an era when the home was the center of family life and the housekeeper’s knowledge was essential to comfort and prosperity, the book offers far more than cooking instructions. Readers will discover guidance on budgeting, marketing, preserving foods, caring for the sick, laundry work, cleaning, household remedies, table service, and the countless daily responsibilities that defined Victorian domestic life. Of special note is the extensive information about butchering and the proper slaughter of animals. There are also so many medicinal tips and recipes including a full page of antidotes for accidental poisoning. Way back in 1886, and especially in rural areas, doctors were few and far between. Complete and all inclusive household books, such as this one, were referred to again and again to cure the sick, prevent illnesses, and what to do in an emergency. The housewife served as not just the cook, but was responsible for the entire wellbeing of the entire family.
The recipes included here reflect the tastes and traditions of the period, featuring hearty soups, roasts, game dishes, breads, cakes, puddings, preserves, pickles, and confections. Emphasis is placed on economy and avoiding waste, making the volume especially valuable as a record of how families stretched ingredients and resources in an age before modern conveniences.
Today, this cookbook serves not only as a practical culinary reference but also as a rich historical document. Its pages preserve the wisdom, ingenuity, and resourcefulness of nineteenth-century homemakers, offering modern readers a vivid glimpse into the kitchens, dining rooms, and daily routines of America’s Gilded Age. For collectors of antique cookbooks, culinary historians, and anyone interested in the art of traditional housekeeping, The Free Press Economy Cookbook and Manual of Housekeeping remains an engaging and informative treasure from a bygone era.
