She sailed for China in 1888 with the China Inland Mission. The letters, originally published in Regions Beyond, cover her voyage and early experiences in China (including Hong Kong, Shanghai, Yangzhou/Yangchau, and toward the Poyang Lake area), with vivid accounts of travel, daily life, language/culture adjustment, work among Chinese women, nursing the sick, and responses to opium-related crises.
