1890s I. Bedichimer Masonic Marks Cameo Ad Cover Philadelphia, PA to Camden NJ:
$91.31

This striking late-nineteenth-century postal envelope features a one-cent green George Washington postage stamp, utilized to pay the third-class or unsealed circular rate. The stamp is tied by a clear Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, cancellation dated July 5 at 4:30 PM. The envelope is a spectacular example of a surface-tinted \"cameo\" advertising cover, where the background is printed in a beautiful pale blue hue, leaving the elegant typography and design in crisp, uninked white relief.

The advertisement promotes I. Bedichimer, located at 616 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. Isaac Bedichimer was a highly prominent and successful manufacturing jeweler who specialized almost exclusively in producing gold and silver \"Masonic Marks,\" pins, and elaborate fraternal emblems for various lodges. During this era, Philadelphia was an absolute manufacturing powerhouse with a booming population exceeding one million residents in the 1890 census, and Chestnut Street was the premier commercial corridor for high-end jewelers and craftsmen. The reverse of the envelope (Scan 36) notes it was manufactured locally by Edward Stern & Co., a well-known Philadelphia printing firm.

The correspondence is addressed to A. McAllister, Esq., at 548 Federal Street in Camden, New Jersey. At the time, Camden was a rapidly growing industrial city situated just across the Delaware River, harboring a population of approximately 58,000 residents by 1890. The reverse of the envelope displays a wonderfully crisp Camden receiving postmark stamped on July 5 at 7:00 PM. This incredible two-and-a-half-hour transit time stands as a stunning testament to the highly efficient ferry and rail-mail connections operating between Philadelphia and Camden during the Gilded Age.
