Antique American Waltham Watch Co. open-face pocket watch with a beautiful and unusual fancy enamel dial.
The movement is serial number5,123,968, dating it to approximately1891according to Waltham factory-record information. It is aGrade No. 22, Model 1888, 16-size, 11-jewelmovement with gilt 3/4 plate, Breguet hairspring, pendant setting, and screw-set jewels.
The signed white enamel dial is especially attractive, with highly stylized calligraphic/spiral Arabic numerals, painted floral decoration, gold minute dots and larger gold-colored diamond/lozenge hour accents. It has a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o\'clock. Please see the close-up photographs for the dial details and condition.
The dial is stylistically similar to period fancy dials associated with the Waltham Dial Company/O\'Hara Dial Company, which supplied fancy dials to Waltham during this era. The maker of this particular dial has not been verified, so it is not being represented as an O\'Hara dial
The watch is housed in a laterDefiance base-metal screw-back case, case serial number2,936,156. The completely removable threaded back has attractive engine-turned/engraved decoration.
CONDITION
The watch winds and runs. I have observed it running for several hours, during which it kept time within a few minutes, and the second and minute hands advance normally. The included video shows both the exposed movement running and the hands advancing.
Service history is unknown, and the watch has not been professionally tested for extended accuracy or full power reserve. Because of its age, it is being sold as an antique watch in its present condition rather than with any guarantee of timekeeping accuracy.
The enamel dial has visible age-related hairlines/cracks, particularly on the right/lower-right portion of the dial. The base-metal case shows age-related wear. Please examine all photographs closely for condition.
