Extremely scarce Japan Vellum edition of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, translated into English prose by Justin Huntly McCarthy and published by fine press printer Thomas B. Mosher in 1896. This is copy number 100 of only 100 printed on Japan vellum — an exquisite handmade paper highly prized by collectors.
Mosher’s vellum editions are among the most collectible works of American private press printing. Very few copies of this version survive, and this may be the only known vellum copy numbered 100 still in private hands.
This edition is part of Mosher’s “Biblot Series,” and includes the original floral-decorated wraps, classic typography, and a colophon stating: “Of this bnook 100 copies are printed on Japan vellum. This is No. 100.”
Condition:
Condition: Good. Covers show age-related wear, creasing, and edge chipping, particularly at the corners and spine ends. The beginning pages are loose but present - see photo of the split between the introduction pages as that is where the book splits from the main body of the book, Interior pages are clean and printed on beautiful, lightly toned Japan vellum paper. No markings or repairs. A fragile but complete and exceptionally scarce copy of one of Mosher’s most limited deluxe productions.
