The Golden Vanity and The Green Bed
Words and Music of Two Old English Ballads
With Pictures by Pamela Colman Smith
New York: Doubleday & McClure Co.
1899
First Edition, First Issue
Large slim folio, publisher\'s original green cloth covered boards with color pictorial paste downs. Illustrated with full-page color plates. Front free endpaper bears an early presentation ink stamp, “Compliments of Heinigke & Bowen,” indicating contemporary promotional distribution. Now in a protective clear mylar jacket. Some losses to the back strip, front hinge and gutter cracked, some slight discoloration, a few small tears, else in good + condition.
A beautifully produced nursery and folk-ballad anthology, richly illustrated in the decorative late-19th-century style and issued as a deluxe children’s gift book. An attractive and increasingly scarce first issue.
