1900 Nisbet Our Forests and Woodlands Zaehnsdorf Morocco Leather Binding 1st Ed
NISBET, John. Our Forests and Woodlands. London: J. M. Dent & Co., Aldine House, 1900.
First edition. Full morocco leather binding signed by Zaehnsdorf.
An attractively bound first edition of John Nisbet’s illustrated study of British forests and woodland management, issued in the Haddon Hall Library, edited by the Marquess of Granby and George A. B. Dewar.
The work combines the history of British forests with discussions of woodland trees, planting, cultivation, and the practical management of timber. Illustrated with photographic plates of woodland scenery and trees, together with decorative chapter headings and tailpieces by Arthur Rackham. The title page and series title are printed in red and black.
Signed Riviere Binding
Bound in full warm brown morocco leather, the spine with five raised bands and gilt lettering. The restrained exterior emphasizes the leather’s rich color and grain, complemented by gilt-ruled turn-ins, green decorative endpapers, and gilt page edges. Signed by Riviere on the lower front turn-in.
Provenance
With the engraved bookplate of Samuel Strong Spaulding, incorporating books, floral ornament, an elephant’s head crest, and the motto Hinc mihi salus.
Condition
Good antiquarian condition. Leather shows rubbing along the joints, raised bands, corners, and spine ends, with scattered surface marks and uneven darkening. Gilt spine lettering remains legible. Endpapers show discoloration, with wear along the inner hinges. Internally, light age toning and occasional spotting or handling marks; the illustrated pages remain attractive.
