The dragon 50 sen was born of Japan\'s sweeping Meiji-era modernization, when the New Currency Act of 1871 replaced the old feudal coinage with a Western-style decimal yen system struck on modern machinery at the Osaka Mint. The coiled dragon obverse, paired with a chrysanthemum crest and wreath, became one of the most admired designs of the period, and Meiji year 38 (1905), the year of the Russo-Japanese War, marked the final year of the large-type dragon 50 sen before the design was retired.
