The binder’s signature identifies the volume as the work of one of the most respected English bookbinding houses of its period.
Riviere & Son was particularly associated with high-quality private-library, presentation, and collector bindings. Although less elaborate than the firm’s exhibition bindings, this volume displays the careful forwarding, balanced proportions, quality leather, and precise gilt finishing characteristic of its commercial library work.
SIR THOMAS BROWNE
Sir Thomas Browne was an English physician, philosopher, antiquary, and one of the great prose stylists of the seventeenth century.
His writing combines religious meditation, scientific curiosity, antiquarian learning, natural history, mortality, memory, and philosophical speculation. His distinctive prose is admired for its rich vocabulary, elaborate rhythms, and remarkable musicality.

The binding remains firm, attractive, and well preserved. The midnight-blue morocco leather retains strong color, and the gilt spine lettering and decoration remain bright and legible.
There is minor rubbing and wear at the corners, spine extremities, raised bands, joints, and other projecting areas. The joints remain sound.
The blue cloth-covered boards are clean and presentable, with only minor evidence of age and handling.
The marbled endpapers remain attractive, and the top edge retains its gilt finish. The Riviere & Son signature is clearly present on the front turn-in.
Internally, the volume is clean and tight, with supple paper, light age toning, and no major defects observed.
