Sixth edition of Ella Wheeler Wilcox\'s verse collection Poems of Pleasure. It is the authorised London edition from Gay and Bird, with a preface dated New York, September 1900. The Passional section opens the volume with poems such as Woman and War, Poverty and Wealth, Freedom, True Charity and War Sonnets. Expect Victorian and Edwardian sentimental and social verse with decorative initials, ending with the poem Now on page 180.
Condition:
Hardcover in off-white cloth boards with printed title, author name and a framed vignette on the front. The cloth is soiled throughout, with stains, faint pink marks and dark specks, mostly on the back board. The spine cloth is tanned and slightly darker than the boards, with rubbing and wear to the spine ends and corners. Both pastedowns are toned and spotted, and the edges of the endpapers are lifting. The gutter shows exposed sewing thread at the contents page. The front free endpaper carries a handwritten ink inscription (Robert Bevan, Laurie, 6/4/07) and a small pencil mark. The text pages are clean and readable with light age toning and scattered spots.
