1908 Syracuse BBC signed ledger sheet-Rare difficult MLB names-Hess, Ryan, Works For Sale

An absolutely rare and amazing 1908 ledger sheet from The St. Charles Hotel, in Cortland, NY. This hotel ledger sheet has been signed by an interesting group of guest/ballplayers as well as other guests who stayed at the hotel, Saturday, August 1, 1908.Thomas Joseph Hess- Catcher, d. 1945. Joseph played from 1882-1911, mostly with minor league teams, in the NYState League, out West, Canada and some in the Texas League. He played one year in the majors, with the 1892 Baltimore Oriole team, which was their inaugural year in The National League. Jack \"Gulfport Jack\" Ryan, a pitcher who played for three different major league teams during his tenure in the big leagues. He debuted in 1908 with the Cleveland Naps, then with the Boston Red Sox in 1909 and finished out in 1911 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was famously known for the trade in which he, Charlie Chech and $12,500 went from the Cleveland Naps to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for HOF pitcher Cy Young. In between he played for various minor league teams out West in California and in the Midwest. During the 1907-1908 seasons he pitched for this Syracuse team. In 1918 he enlisted into the Navy and pitched for the Balboa Nine in San Diego while serving.William Thomas \"Thomy, Sleeping Bill,\" Burns, d.1953, pitched from 1908 to 1912 for minor league teams in The Interstate League, as well as up in the major leagues. He debuted in 1908 with The Washington Senators, then 1909-10, The Chicago White sox, 1910-11, The Cincinnati Reds, as well as Philadelphia in 1911 and then finishing his career with The Detroit Tigers in 1912. Thomy was implicated with the infamous 1919 Black Sox scandal. Ralph Talmadge \"Judge\" Works, d. 1941. Ralph started his career in 1906, in the Canadian Minor leagues, and then with the Syracuse Stars in 1908. His Major League debut was in 1909 with the Detroit Tigers, pitching for them until 1912 when he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds for the 1912-13 season. He died of a self inflicted gun shot wound in 1941.Walter Vincent Tobias- d. 1945. A local Lebanon, Ohio amateur baseball player, Walter was deaf and his trade at the time besides baseball was as a tailor specializing in men\'s suits. W.H. Truax- He was a businessman and a baseball promoter/manager for amateur Syracuse and other teams. James A. Daley- d.1943. From 1903 until 1909, James played for many minor and high amateur town and organized teams. He played for Kingston, Poughkeepsie, Columbia, Macon and then in New York with Seneca Falls and Syracuse.Thomas William Stroh, d-1959 was a catcher for many NY and Interstate League teams from 1898-1915 like Utica, Lancaster, Allentown and York. Through all my research on this, I still am not sure why all the players mostly catchers and pitchers have signed. However, every town in upstate NY had tremendous talent to create traveling teams and their summers were filled with league games or exhibitions. Please reach out with any questions before you offer.
