The Quest of the Yellow Pearl by P. C. Macfarlane (Peter Clark Macfarlane), published by Fleming H. Revell Company, 1909. First edition in its attractive original illustrated paper-covered binding, with artwork and binding design credited to H. J. Turner.
This small illustrated volume follows the quest for the mysterious “yellow pearl” and includes a tipped-in illustrated frontispiece as well as decorative printed page borders and illustrations.
Especially interesting is the group of period ephemera and antique bookmarks found inside the book and included with this copy. These include ornate die-cut/lace-paper pieces, a blue and tan decorative bookmark, and a hand-worked needlepoint/canvas bookmark featuring an anchor and the words “HOPE ON.” An older sentimental printed piece titled “TRUE TO YOU” is also mounted inside the rear cover. All pieces shown in the photographs are included.
The book is in worn antique condition. The original paper-covered boards have substantial edge wear, rubbing, chipping and surface loss. The spine and binding are heavily worn and weakened, with separation visible along the interior hinges. Pages show expected age toning and occasional spotting/handling wear. Despite the condition, the decorative title page, frontispiece and interior printing remain attractive and readable.
An unusual surviving 1909 illustrated book made considerably more interesting by the collection of antique personal bookmarks and ephemera preserved inside it for many years.
