The Type 1 Buffalo Nickel was the original version, showing the buffalo standing on a raised mound. Later in 1913, the design was changed to the Type 2 version, where the ground was modified and the denomination area was recessed to help prevent excessive wear.
Because of this short production period, the Type 1 Buffalo Nickel remains a must-have historic variety for collectors.
