Scarce 1918 first edition of this unusual firsthand account of alleged spirit healing through trance mediumship, published by the important occult and esoteric London bookseller and publisher John M. Watkins.
Writing anonymously under the initials E. M. S., the author recounts a prolonged illness and an extraordinary course of treatment purportedly directed by a deceased physician known as “Dr. Beale,” communicating through the medium “Miss Rose.”
The narrative describes trance communications, psychic diagnosis, treatment and recovery, prayer, experiments intended to test the phenomena, and the author\'s attempts to determine whether the apparent intervention of the unseen could be explained by ordinary means.
The book was sufficiently notable within contemporary Spiritualist circles to be advertised in 1918 as an account of a remarkable cure by “supernormal means.” Arthur Conan Doyle later discussed the work in The Wanderings of a Spiritualist, describing it as the story of a woman reportedly restored to health through the ministrations of the deceased Dr. Beale. The work was subsequently issued in the United States by Henry Holt in 1920 under the more striking title The Unseen Doctor; or, The Power of the Unseen. The Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research explicitly identified that edition as the American issue of the English publication One Thing I Know. IAPSOP

Good. Original blue cloth binding with rubbing, edge wear, and general shelf wear. Spine darkened, with the gilt lettering substantially dulled. Fraying and a small area of cloth loss at the head of the spine, as shown in the photographs. Corners and board edges rubbed and worn.
Endpapers browned. Text block shows expected age toning, scattered foxing, and occasional marginal discoloration. Pages remain generally clean and readily legible. Binding remains intact.
No dust jacket.
