Offered here is a scarce 1919 Ukrainian-language American edition of Friedrich Engels\' The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State (Початок родини, приватної власности і держави).
Published in New York in 1919, this early Ukrainian-American printing is associated with the Ukrainian socialist/working-class publishing movement in the United States and represents an interesting piece of both political and Ukrainian immigrant publishing history.
The work is Engels\' influential study of the development of the family, private property and the state, drawing heavily upon the anthropological research of Lewis H. Morgan.
This edition is particularly interesting as an early Ukrainian-language edition printed in America. The original red cloth binding features attractive gilt Ukrainian lettering and decorative ornamentation.
The book is complete through page 192.
Historical Features & Provenance
This copy retains several period ownership markings that add to its history:
- Old handwritten inscriptions on the preliminary/endpaper pages
- An oval institutional/organizational-style stamp on the title page
- A rectangular ownership stamp reading “SEMEN HAWRYLISZYN”
- Additional handwritten ownership markings
No attempt has been made to remove or alter these historical markings.
Condition
Antique condition with age and binding wear.
The original red cloth covers remain attractive, with gilt lettering and decoration still displaying well. Exterior shows expected rubbing, edge/corner wear, spotting and other signs of age.
Interior pages show age toning, scattered foxing/spotting, staining and occasional soiling. Period ownership inscriptions and stamps are present as described above.
Important binding note: The text block shows separation from the case/spine, creating a visible gap when the book is opened. The pages remain together and no loose text pages have been observed, but the binding is weakened and should be handled carefully.
The final numbered page, 192, is present.
Please examine all photographs carefully, particularly the close-up photographs of the binding, as they are an important part of the condition description.
The book has not been repaired, cleaned or restored.
