Circa 1920s large-format vintage black-and-white glamour portrait of silent-screen star Betty Compson (1897–1974). Measuring approximately 11 x 14, this Melbourne Spurr / Hollywood studio photograph is inscribed and signed in dark ink: “To Joe Walker, With Best wishes, Sincerely, Betty Compson.”

Betty Compson (1897–1974) rose from Al Christie comedy shorts to stardom in The Miracle Man (1919) opposite Lon Chaney. She was one of the highest-paid actresses of the 1920s, earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for The Barker (1928), and gave a memorable performance in Josef von Sternberg’s The Docks of New York (1928). She also produced some of her own pictures and continued into early talkies before retiring from the screen in 1948.

This oversized Spurr portrait was inscribed personally to Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Joseph (Joe) Walker.
