original 1925 typewritten logbook (7 pages) documenting a high-end fishing trip through the Florida Keys aboard a boat called the Rowena.
What makes it special is that it was written and signed by George Briggs Buchanan, who was a massive Wall Street tycoon during the Gilded Age and a huge maritime enthusiast. He was hosting a group of prominent New York society friends, including a well-known attorney named George Shearer and members of the Potts and Billings families.
The diary captures the legendary Long Key Fishing Camp before it was wiped out by the 1935 hurricane. They spent time fishing all around Key West, Duck Key, Bahia Honda, and New Found Harbor. The entries detail them using early light tackle to hunt for tarpon, bonefish, and sailfish. There is even a great piece of local history in there where they describe a sculling race they had with some local Key West spongers.
The log itself consists of loose manuscript pages with two clean punch holes at the top where it used to be bound. It was found neatly folded up, so the paper is still crisp, and the text is 100% complete and very easy to read. There are 7 pages total including the cover.
