PRE-WWII DUTCH STABLE INTERIOR by TH. TH. DE LEEUW — CIRCA 1930s, WITH WARTIME EXPORT HISTORY
A luminous barn scene with two draft horses, farmhand, and poultry, painted in the Netherlands in the mid-to-late 1930s by Thomas (Th.) de Leeuw. This is not a post-war decorative copy — it is an early work that left Europe just before the Nazi occupation.
Why this painting matters
De Leeuw was a concert violinist who turned to painting in the 1930s. This canvas bears the green-crayon inventory \"20 M.S. Rozemberg\" on its original stretcher bar. Rozemberg was a Hague art dealer whose family received Portuguese transit visas in Bordeaux on June 19, 1940 and fled to Brazil in 1941. Paintings marked this way were part of the 1940 emergency shipments to New York to fund escape.
After the war, the rolled canvas was professionally mounted in the US on a period Anco Bilt stretcher, Glendale NY — Anco Bilt hardware is documented as \"manufactured by Anco Bilt of Glendale, New York (ca. 1940s)\", also listed as ca. 1940s in trade catalogs. It was then fitted in its current hand-carved American frame (1930s-40s Spanish Revival style).
