Margaret Mitchell — Gone with the Wind — 1936 First Edition, Second Printing
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1936. First edition, second printing, with the copyright page stating “Set up and electrotyped. Published June, 1936.” An early printing issued immediately following the May 1936 first printing of Margaret Mitchell’s celebrated novel.
Original gray cloth binding lettered and decorated in blue on the front board and spine. A desirable early issue of one of the defining American novels of the twentieth century, published in the same year as the first printing and preceding the novel’s 1937 Pulitzer Prize and the celebrated 1939 film adaptation.
Condition: Good. Original cloth shows moderate overall rubbing, handling wear, and scattered soiling, with wear and light fraying at the spine ends and corners. Spine lettering and decorative stamping remain readily visible. Page edges toned and somewhat soiled from age and use. Previous-owner inscription to the front pastedown. Endpapers show scattered minor spotting/soiling. Interior otherwise generally clean and well preserved for an extensively read 1936 copy. Binding remains intact. Lacking the dust jacket. Please examine photographs carefully for condition.
An appealing, unrestored example of the June 1936 second printing, retaining its original publisher’s cloth and offering a considerably more accessible alternative to the increasingly expensive May 1936 first printing.
