This 1940 Denver Minted Mercury silver dime has a rare error or mistake the 1940 date has an additional 0 stamped across the 1940, it looks . Pretty cool find. I was looking through my dad’s old collection and found this. It had been in his safe probably 48 years in a roll of Mercury dimes. I remember him taking me to a coin shop in Detroit somewhere and explaining how to buy silver as an investment.
I don’t claim to grade coins or money but only as subjective based on my opinion. I think in the 1940’s people weren’t thinking about errors. I’m not sure still learning but this is definitely a rare find. Look for yourselves. I’ve been looking and researching to find another like it? Perhaps it was on the machine next to a coin that was 50% or 25% off center. Perhaps the machine was off, coins were minted by machines calibrated by humans not computers. You tell me?
