Selected Poems by Louis MacNeice, first published in 1940 and offered here as the fourth impression (February 1943). It gathers 20 poems from Poems (1935), The Earth Compels and Autumn Journal. Expect early MacNeice, including An Eclogue for Christmas, Birmingham, Belfast, Carrickfergus, Leaving Barra and Bagpipe Music.
Condition:
Hardcover in pale blue-green paper-covered boards with a grey cloth spine, no dust jacket. The boards are lightly rubbed and toned. The spine cloth is soiled and worn, with fraying and loose threads at the head and foot. The endpapers are browned along the gutters and hinges, with foxing spots on the front and rear endpapers. The title page has a small foxing spot. The text block is on wartime paper, evenly age-toned, and the pages inspected look clean. Ownership marks include \"E. Hutton 9/9/44\" and a signature reading \"David J. Niven\" on the front free endpaper, and pencilled notations \"4/3\" and \"K/1\". There is a Melbourne bookseller\'s label, The Chaucer, Howey Court, 234 Collins Street, on the front pastedown. Binding is sound and the book opens well.
