About Lou Boudreau:
Lou Boudreau was one of the premier shortstops and player-managers of his generation. Named Cleveland\'s player-manager at just 24 years old, he became a seven-time All-Star and won the 1944 American League batting title. His greatest season came in 1948, immediately preceding the issue of this 1949 Bowman card. Boudreau batted .355 with 199 hits, 116 runs and 106 RBI, won the American League Most Valuable Player Award, and led Cleveland to the World Series championship as player-manager. He also became closely associated with the defensive alignment known as the \"Boudreau Shift,\" devised against Ted Williams. Boudreau was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1970, the same year Cleveland retired his No. 5.
About the Set:
The 1949 Bowman baseball set consists of 240 cards measuring approximately 2-1/16\" by 2-1/2\". Following Bowman\'s black-and-white 1948 issue, the 1949 set introduced tinted player photographs, colored uniforms, and pastel backgrounds, creating one of the distinctive early postwar Bowman designs. The set was issued in seven series, with high-number cards #145-240 produced in smaller quantities and generally more difficult to find.
