This is the lowest-mintage business strike of the entire Franklin series at just 3,744,000 pieces, and it is widely recognized as the mintage key date of the series. Unlike the 1948 issues that were saved as first-year novelties, the 1949-S went straight into circulation and was largely ignored by collectors at the time, which makes attractive Mint State examples genuinely tough to locate today.
