Original Bachelor of Science diploma issued by the United States Military Academy at West Point on June 4, 1957, to John Eugene Murphy of New York, Class of 1957, Cullum No. 21330.
The diploma features engraved West Point imagery, including the American eagle, USMA shield, flags, military equipment, and allegorical scenes. It bears signatures of West Point officials from the period.
Military Service and History
John Eugene “Jack” Murphy graduated from West Point in 1957 and subsequently completed Infantry, Airborne, and Ranger training.
His military career included service in Germany and with the 187th Airborne during the Lebanon deployment. Following a training accident in which he lost his left eye, Murphy continued his Army career in the Quartermaster Corps.
He served as Chief of the Air Delivery Branch at the Quartermaster School at Fort Lee and is credited in his West Point memorial biography with helping develop the Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System (LAPES).
From 1964 to 1965, Murphy served in Vietnam as S-4 of the 5th Special Forces Group, overseeing logistics support. His decorations included the Bronze Star Medal and Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters.
He later served as Joint Area Petroleum Officer Europe and retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1969.
Murphy subsequently lived in Denver, Colorado, and served as president of the West Point Society of Denver from 1985 to 1993. He died in 2013 and is buried at West Point Cemetery.
