USS Bigelow (DD-942), a Forrest Sherman-class destroyer, had several notable deployments and operations during her 1957–1982 career, especially in the Cold War era.Cuban Missile Crisis (1962)After returning from a Mediterranean deployment, Bigelow joined the naval quarantine (blockade) of Cuba in late October 1962 as part of Combined Task Group 136.1.1. She helped enforce the blockade against Soviet shipping and received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for this service.Space Program SupportIn March 1965, she participated in the recovery force for the Gemini III mission (astronauts Gus Grissom and John Young). Bigelow was stationed in the Atlantic re-entry area as a secondary recovery ship in case the capsule landed near her sector.Dominican Republic Crisis (1965)In May 1965, during the U.S. intervention (Operation Power Pack), Bigelow was ordered from Mayport on short notice to join Task Force 124 for patrol and contingency duties off Hispaniola.Vietnam War ServiceBigelow deployed to the Western Pacific and conducted combat operations off Vietnam, including gunfire support. She is documented as docking at Da Nang (e.g., April 1967) and participating in operations such as Sea Dragon. She later earned Vietnam service recognition.Mediterranean and Other DeploymentsShe made multiple Mediterranean deployments with the Sixth Fleet (including 1959, 1962, and 1963).
