1963 Vatican City 500 Lire Sede Vacante silver coin, KM#75, struck at the Rome Mint during the interregnum following the death of Pope John XXIII and prior to the election of Pope Paul VI.
The coin features the arms of Cardinal Benedetto Aloisi-Masella beneath the papal ombrellino and crossed keys, with the inscription “SEDE VACANTE MCMLXIII.” The reverse depicts the Holy Spirit as a radiant dove with “VENI SANCTE SPIRITVS,” “STATO DELLA CITTA DEL VATICANO,” and the denomination L.500.
.835 silver, 11 grams, 29.3 mm diameter, containing approximately 0.2953 troy oz of silver. Only 200,000 examples were minted.
This example displays strong original luster and appears Choice Uncirculated/BU from the photographs. It is housed with its original red Sede Vacante presentation holder/case, adding collector appeal.
