This is an extremely rare copy of THE SHARK: Splendid Savage of The Sea signed by BOTH authors, underwater pioneer Jacques-Yves Cousteau and his son Philippe. The autographs of the authors appear on the title page. Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s handwritten signature appears in black at the upper left corner, as was his habit. Philippe Cousteau’s handwritten signature, in purple marker, is nearer to the title.
JACQUES-YVES COUSTEAU was a French naval officer, oceanographer, filmmaker, and author whose work opened the underwater world to millions through films, books, and television. Born on June 11, 1910, he co-invented the Aqua-lung underwater breathing apparatus and became one of the most influential ocean explorers of the 20th century. Cousteau died of a heart attack on June 25, 1997, in Paris at age 87. His legacy continues through marine conservation and the Cousteau Society.
PHILIPPE COUSTEAU, born December 30, 1940, was the son of Jacques-Yves Cousteau. He was a diver, sailor, pilot, cinematographer, and environmental advocate, serving as the lead cinematographer for many Cousteau expeditions. Known for his skill filming underwater, on land, and from the air, he helped shape the visual language of ocean exploration. He died on June 28, 1979, at age 38. His death resulted from a plane crash during a test flight over the Tagus River in Portugal. Philippe Cousteau’s work and passion continue through his children and the broader Cousteau legacy.
