MY VINTAGE RECORD GRADING SCALE
These records are 40-50 years old. Don\'t expect them to sound like new 180gram represses! Remember, if you are buying a first press, you are also buying a piece of music history! My grades are based on visual PLUS playing on my vintage system (Pioneer SX-80 receiver, Technics SL-J2 turntable, Boston HD-10 speakers). You will hear some surface noise on most these used old records. I will not sell a record I would not listen to, unless the bad condition is noted.
⭐ Mint (M)
A perfect, factory‑fresh record. No marks, no handling, no spindle wear, no warping. Jacket is flawless with no creases or wear. Extremely rare for vintage records.
⭐ Near Mint (NM or M-)
Looks almost new. Very minimal signs of handling. Vinyl is glossy with no visible marks. Plays clean with virtually no noise. Jacket has sharp corners and no ring wear.
⭐ Very Good Plus (VG+)
Light cosmetic marks or faint scuffs that do not affect play significantly. May have very light surface noise in quiet passages. Jacket may show minor edge wear or light ring wear but remains solid and attractive.
⭐ Very Good (VG)
Noticeable surface marks and light scratches, but still plays well with some surface noise or crackle. No skips. Jacket shows moderate wear, ring wear, or small creases. Still a good, collectible copy.
⭐ Good / Good Plus (G / G+)
Record plays through but with consistent noise, pops, or crackle. Visible scratches. Jacket may have seam wear, splits, or writing. Still usable but clearly well‑loved.
⭐ Fair (F)
Record has heavy wear, loud noise, or may skip. Jacket may be heavily damaged. Suitable mostly for completionists or display.
⭐ Poor (P)
Record is cracked, warped, or unplayable. Jacket severely damaged. Only useful as a placeholder or for artwork.
📌 How Collectors Interpret These Grades
- M/NM = top collector quality
- VG+ = strong, clean, desirable
- VG = good everyday listening copy
- G/G+ = budget copy
- F/P = not recommended unless rare
