Rare Wayne Gretzky Autographed Soo Greyhounds #14 Throwback Hockey Jersey – Wayne Gretzky Authentics
A truly outstanding and unusual piece of Wayne Gretzky memorabilia — a Sault Ste. Marie Soo Greyhounds #14 throwback hockey jersey, personally autographed by Wayne Gretzky in bold blue Sharpie across the back number.
Long before #99 became the most famous number in hockey, a 16-year-old Wayne Gretzky arrived in Sault Ste. Marie for the 1977–78 season. Gretzky had traditionally favored #9 in tribute to his childhood idol, Gordie Howe, but that number was already being worn by Greyhounds veteran Brian Gualazzi. Before adopting the number that would eventually become legendary, Gretzky experimented briefly with #19 and then #14. He ultimately debuted #99 in November 1977, beginning one of the most recognizable player-number associations in all of professional sports.
That short-lived #14 period makes this throwback jersey an exceptional conversation piece, representing Gretzky immediately before the birth of the iconic #99 identity.
The jersey recreates the classic red-and-white Soo Greyhounds styling, with the vintage running greyhound crest prominently displayed on the front, “GRETZKY” across the back shoulders and large sewn #14 numerals on the back and sleeves. A distinctive embroidered #99 tribute patch appears along the lower rear hem.
Gretzky\'s autograph is executed in blue Sharpie across the back #14, providing excellent contrast against the white numeral and creating a commanding display presentation.
Importantly, this jersey originated from Wayne Gretzky Authentics, Gretzky\'s own memorabilia program, and bears the distinctive Wayne Gretzky Authentics hologram affixed directly to the jersey. The jersey additionally carries two SportsMemorabilia.com authentication holograms, all visible in the accompanying photographs.
Gretzky\'s lone season with the Soo Greyhounds was nothing short of extraordinary. In 63 games during the 1977–78 season, the teenage phenom recorded 70 goals and 112 assists for 182 points, establishing a Greyhounds single-season scoring record that remains part of the franchise\'s history. He was also named the league\'s Rookie of the Year before leaving junior hockey the following season to begin his professional career in the WHA.
What followed became hockey history: four Stanley Cup championships, nine Hart Trophies, ten Art Ross Trophies and a career that ultimately resulted in #99 being retired throughout the entire NHL.
A fantastic conversation piece and an especially appealing Gretzky collectible — not simply because it bears the autograph of “The Great One,” but because the #14 tells the story of Wayne Gretzky before #99 became legendary.
IMPORTANT: This is a throwback/reproduction-style collectible jersey commemorating Gretzky\'s early Soo Greyhounds career and is not represented as game-worn, game-used, or an original 1977–78 Gretzky jersey. Authentication holograms are affixed directly to the jersey as photographed. Please review all photographs carefully for jersey construction, condition, signature placement and authentication markings.
