Legends & Lore was published in 1984. It served as a massive encyclopedia of divine entities, mythic heroes, and legendary monsters from real-world history and classic fantasy literature, complete with full statistical blocks so that players could theoretically encounter or fight them in their campaigns.
The book is divided into distinct chapters, each dedicated to a specific historical or literary mythos. These included the Arthurian heroes, the Greek pantheon, Egyptian gods, Norse mythology, Celtic legends, Chinese myths, Japanese lore, and Aztec deities. Each section provided brief historical context, descriptions of major gods and heroes, and unique monsters native to those legends.
Unlike later editions which treated gods as untouchable cosmic forces, the first edition treated them much like incredibly powerful monsters. Every god, demigod, and hero was given standard Advanced Dungeons & Dragons statistics. They had specific Armor Classes, Hit Points (often ranging from 200 to 400), movement speeds, and explicit weapon damage values. This design choice meant that high-level player characters could technically track down, battle, and slay actual gods like Thor, Zeus, or Anubis during a game session.
