1985 NEWGAS Newcastle Gas Company Clyde Street Works Closure Presentation Plaque
Scarce original NEWGAS presentation plaque commemorating the closure of the Clyde Street Works in Newcastle on 30 June 1985.
Presented to A.E. Goodman and inscribed:
“In Recognition of 1688 Days Free of Lost Time Accidents”
The plaque features a detailed period illustration of the Clyde Street gasworks, including the works buildings and gas holder.
This is considerably more than a generic workplace safety award. It specifically commemorates the closure of one of Newcastle\'s long-running industrial sites and identifies both the date and individual recipient.
The City of Newcastle Gas and Coke Company established its major Clyde Street works after acquiring the site in 1910, with gas manufacture commencing there in January 1913. Historical records show the Clyde Street gasworks operating from 1913 until 1985, placing this presentation piece at the end of more than seven decades of gas production at the site.
The Newcastle Gas and Coke Company itself dates to the 1860s and played an important role in Newcastle\'s development, initially supplying gas for lighting before expanding its operations as the city and local industry grew.
