An elaborate 19th-century French gilt bronze three-light wall sconce in the Louis XVI taste, richly cast with classical figures, tied ribbons, laurel branches, floral ornament and an urn-form trophy.
The tall, pierced backplate is organized as a vertical neoclassical composition. A ribbon-and-rosette crest suspends a paired-bird ornament above an open architectural framework framed by ascending laurel branches. At the center, a classical urn with further tied-ribbon ornamentation complete the lower portion.
Three gracefully curved candle arms project from the backplate, each terminating in a shaped bobeche and urn-form candle cup. The center light projects forward between the two sweeping outer branches.
The sconce retains a warm aged gilt surface with darker patination and oxidation within the recesses, giving considerable definition to the intricate casting.
Matching examples of this distinctive French casting have been documented in the antiques market, including both two- and three-light configurations.

Number3 Notes
The remarkable density of the casting is balanced by an unusually elegant vertical composition. Tied ribbons, laurel, classical figures and the central urn rise through the pierced backplate almost like an architectural trophy, while the three candle branches extend the form outward. The aged gilding has settled into the relief particularly well, leaving the ornament legible without diminishing the object\'s considerable decorative presence.
