The Thibault Sisters have an entry in the 1883 edition of “ThePretty Women of Paris,” a directory of prostitutes or courtesansbased on the Prefecture of Police files. On pages 173-174, Bertheand Blanche of the Opera Comique….Berthe and Blanche are of goodstature—fair, with plump thick bodies, and bold handsome features. They are very much alike in appearance, but Berthe is lively andBlanche inclined to sadness….Their deceased father’s debts had tobe paid, so Berthe left the stage and took a lover, and she has neverreturned to the boards. Blanche had also to sell herself….Both aregenial, kind whores, and they adore their little sister, who has notyet lost her rose.”
