Beautiful and original (no noted repairs, or paint touch ups) antique 20-inch papier-mâché shoulder-head doll dating to the mid-to-late 19th century (circa 1850s–1870s). She is in the classic style of Ludwig Greiner or similar German/American makers of the period.
Features:
• Solid papier-mâché shoulder head with beautifully molded and painted black hair in a center-part style with soft waves and curls framing the face
• Rare glass pupil-less eyes (solid dark glass) that give her a striking, lifelike expression
• Closed mouth with original painted features, rosy cheeks, and delicately painted details
• Cloth body with original-style brown leather/kid hands
• Wears her black dress with white eyelet/lace apron, decorative brass padlock-and-key pin, and a small jeweled brooch at the neck
• Black boots/shoes, striped stockings, and lace-trimmed 20 inches tall
Condition:
Good antique condition consistent with age. There is a visible crack on the neck/shoulder plate area and expected crazing/surface wear to the head and paint. The leather hands show age-related wear. Clothing is period or original and shows some fraying, discoloration, and wear, especially to the lace, but remains intact and very charming. No major missing parts. Please examine all photos carefully as they are part of the description.
This is a lovely example of a mid-Victorian papier-mâché lady doll with the desirable glass eyes. She displays beautifully and would make a wonderful addition to any antique doll collection.
