Historical Context of the 2003 Transnistria Bendery 100 Rubles Silver Coin
Issued in 2003 by the Transnistrian Republican Bank (Приднестровский республиканский банк), this legal-tender silver commemorative was struck as part of the esteemed \"Coats of Arms of the Cities of Transnistria\" series. It honors the ancient fortress city of Bendery (Tighina), originally chartered in 1408 along the Dniester River.
The obverse displays the official State Emblem of the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (PMR), featuring traditional agricultural sheaves framing a hammer and sickle before a rising sun, inscribed 100 РУБЛЕЙ 2003. The reverse portrays the historic 1826 Russian imperial coat of arms granted to the city by Czar Nicholas I: an ornate shield split into two fields featuring the two-headed imperial eagle holding thunderbolts in the upper half, and a recumbent lion in the lower half. The lion commemorates Swedish King Charles XII, who found refuge in the fortress of Bendery following the 1709 Battle of Poltava. Struck in solid .925 sterling silver with an official mintage of just 500 pieces, this is one of the scarcest modern world silver issues in existence.
