For your consideration, a little bit of flag waving thanks to Francis Scott Key, a naval bombardment and an old British drinking song. In 2012 the US Mint celebrated the bicentennial of the writing of the poem that eventually became our National Anthem. Francis Scott Key was a lawyer sent to negotiate the release of some American prisoners from the Brits. Being fluent in English.... Key was detained by the Limeys as he overheard their plans to bomb Fort McHenry at the entrance to Baltimore Harbor. Key was treated to the 25 hour assault, replete with the British sailors singing \"To Anacreon in Heaven\", a toasting song from a London based amateur musical society. The song provided the cadence to the poem he wrote about that night.
This is a well struck silver uncirculated coin that has a truly fantastic design pairing. It is easily one of my all time favorite commemorative coins. I like it so much that I have two versions of this coin that I am retaining for my personal collection. Take a minute or three and study this coin, it is a great one. So, as always, happy coin shopping and thank you all for looking and for reading along!!
