2019-W American Memorial Park quarter from the West Point Mint. Circulating America the Beautiful issue, copper-nickel clad, and one of the first W mint-mark quarters the United States ever put into pocket change.
The reverse shows a young Chamorro woman in traditional dress at the Flag Circle and Court of Honor on Saipan. Her hand rests on the memorial plaque. Behind her: the flagpoles, the U.S. flag at the center, and the steps of the court. Legends read AMERICAN MEMORIAL PARK, N. MARIANA ISLANDS, 2019, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
Designer initials DW and sculptor initials PH are on the reverse. The obverse has the restored Flanagan portrait of Washington with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, QUARTER DOLLAR, and the W mint mark under the motto. Reeded edge.
History & Significance:
American Memorial Park on Saipan honors the people who died in the Marianas Campaign of World War II. The Battle of Saipan ran from June 15 to July 9, 1944. The Court of Honor has 26 granite panels with the names of 5,204 service members. The park also marks Chamorro and Carolinian civilian dead. It was established in 1978.
The quarter is that place: a living islander at a war memorial, not a battle scene.
This is the 47th coin in the America the Beautiful program and the second 2019 design. Official circulation date was April 1, 2019. Launch ceremony on Saipan April 30, 2019.
Why this coin hits:
In 2019 the U.S. Mint did something it had not done on circulating quarters. West Point struck 2,000,000 of each design with a W mint mark and mixed them into Philadelphia and Denver bags headed for banks. Not sold in mint sets. Not released to dealers in bulk. You found them in change.

Reverse designed by Donna Weaver of the Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. Issued to honor American Memorial Park and to put a scarce W quarter into circulation on purpose.
