The American Liberty series began in 2015 with one clear mission: stop recycling the same old classical female Liberty figure and instead create modern interpretations of what liberty actually means to Americans today.
Every two years the Mint challenges artists to reimagine liberty. In 2025 they chose a powerful theme — stewardship. Liberty is not something you just inherit and forget about. It has to be actively protected and cared for, generation after generation. That idea is perfectly captured by a sunflower and a bee.
Designer (both sides): Christopher Polentz, Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) designer. Outside artist from the San Diego area who applied after seeing a Mint call for artists. His concept was selected after review by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) and the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), then approved by the Secretary of the Treasury.
Obverse sculptor: John P. McGraw – United States Mint Medallic Artist
Reverse sculptor: Eric David Custer – United States Mint Medallic Artist
These Mint sculptors took Polentz’s line drawings and transformed them into full three-dimensional relief models. That sculpt is then used to create hubs and working dies. The finished dies strike the medals under high pressure in proof quality — frosted devices against deep mirrored fields.
This exact design (sunflower & bee obverse with the dynamic swirling eagle reverse) appears on the 2025 American Liberty High Relief Gold Coin, which won the “Best Gold Coin” category in the Coin of the Year (COTY) Awards. Announced by the U.S. Mint in August 2026, the international award recognizes outstanding numismatic design and craftsmanship. While this listing is for the silver medal (not the gold coin), it features the identical award-winning design by Christopher Polentz.
Obverse – Sunflower & Bee 🌻🐝
A highly detailed sunflower in full bloom with a tiny bee resting on the textured center disk.
The sunflower represents growth, resilience, and reaching toward the light.
The bee represents constant, careful work — pollination, protection, and the quiet labor required to keep something alive and thriving.
Together they form a perfect metaphor: liberty requires stewardship. You don’t just get it. You have to tend it.

Reverse – The Most Powerful Eagle in the Entire Series 🦅
This is not your standard heraldic eagle standing still with a shield. This is an energetic, swirling, powerful bald eagle caught in full motion. Wings and body twist and flow in a dynamic spiral that makes the whole reverse feel alive and aggressive. It has serious presence and energy — one of the most modern and striking eagle designs the Mint has put on any American Liberty issue.
Many collectors consider this the strongest and
most “badass” eagle reverse in the entire American Liberty series to date.
