A.E. van Vogt was one of the defining writers of science fiction\'s Golden Age — a SFWA Grand Master whose Slan and The World of Null-A made him, alongside Heinlein and Asimov, one of the three names that dominated Astounding under John W. Campbell. Philip K. Dick named him as the writer who most shaped his own work, and the resemblance is unmistakable: the abrupt reversals, the paranoid logic, the sense that reality itself is unreliable.
Quest for the Future is van Vogt at his most characteristically disorienting. A man walks into a small-town camera shop and is handed a photograph that should not exist — and from there the story spirals outward through time travel, hidden immortals, and a conspiracy operating across centuries, with the ground shifting under the reader every few chapters. Van Vogt famously constructed his plots around an eight-hundred-word scene rhythm and wrote from dreams he deliberately woke himself to record, and the results have a fever-dream logic no one else has managed to reproduce. Essential reading for anyone tracing the line from the pulps to Philip K. Dick.
