Striking African Songye Kifwebe Helmet Mask from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This impressive, three-dimensional piece is hand-carved from a single block of wood and styled as a traditional kikashi (female) spirit mask, recognizable by its rounded crown and lack of a prominent vertical crest.
Design Details
• Aesthetics: Features the classic, deeply incised parallel grooves (striations) that beautifully wrap around the entire head. It displays a bold, geometric square mouth and prominently projecting slit eyes.
• Form: This is a full helmet mask, meticulously hollowed out to fit over the head, rather than a flat face mask.
• Craftsmanship: Visible hand-tool markings from an adze on the interior show the traditional carving process.
Condition Note
The mask is in very good vintage condition with beautiful coloration. Please review the photos carefully to appreciate the rich texture, natural wood grain, and minor superficial wear characteristic of vintage carved wood art.
