The Seine at Poissy, after Albert Marquet
French river landscape after Albert Marquet\'s The Seine at Poissy, sailboats moored below wooded islands, oil on canvas, 1950s, unframed.
The Seine runs calm and wide between two round masses of dark green trees, with white sailboats moored along the right bank and a bridge in the distance. Above, white clouds drift across a blue sky, and the water repeats them, so that the clouds seem to float on the river itself. Everything is drawn in Marquet\'s way, with bold outlines and flat, clear colour.
Marquet painted The Seine at Poissy in 1908, and the original hangs today in the Musée d\'Art moderne de Paris. A friend of Matisse, he came back to the Seine all his life, drawn by its reflections and its changing skies. This canvas follows his composition closely, with a few variations. After Marquet means a copy of his composition painted by another hand. It does not mean by Marquet.
