Offered is an original Alvin Mfg. Co.sterlingsilver bonbon/confection spoon in the celebrated RAPHAEL pattern, introduced1902 at Sag Harbor, New York. Raphael is widely considered one of the finestAmerican Art Nouveau flatware designs ever produced: a classical maiden indiaphanous drapery rises the full length of the handle beneath an outsized irisbloom, and the bowl is pierced in flowing Art Nouveau scrollwork. Productionwas brief and the pattern was never revived - surviving servers are genuinely scarce.
Fully marked STERLING with Alvin’s trademark (blackletterA flanked by two discs). An old script monogram from the original owner isengraved on the handle - period engraving from its first life; note thatspecialist dealers price monogrammed Raphael alongside clean examples becausethe pattern, not the surface, drives the value.
Details: Sterling silver. Weight 44.7 grams.
Condition: Very good antique condition. Crispcasting detail on the maiden and iris, piercing fully intact with no splits orrepairs, no bends to bowl or handle. Scattered dark tarnish in the piercedrecesses. Oldscript monogram as noted.
