An authentic traditional Sinai Bedouin Woman Doll From Sinai Egypt in 2000. The doll is in very good condition, great color, no fading or marks on it at all. The doll is pictured on a stand (stand not included), she sits on her own.
Representing the Bedouin tribes of Egypt\'s Sinai Peninsula.
1. The Traditional Dress (Thobe or Galaweya)
The defining feature of the doll is its floor-length, flowing black dress. The dress is heavily adorned with vibrant, meticulous cross-stitch embroidery (tatreez) and intricate beadwork (nim-nim).
Color Coding: The embroidery colors on the dress often reflect the marital status or age group of the woman being depicted. Unmarried or younger women traditionally feature bright blue embroidery, while married women wear dresses adorned with deep reds, oranges, and yellows.
Geographic Motifs: The patterns are not random; they depict localized desert flora, fauna, and geometric symbols passed down through generations.
2. The Face Veil (Burqo or Yashmak)
Authentic Sinai dolls will feature a distinct desert face cover, a defining trait of Bedouin cultural modesty.
The Burqo: The veil is usually suspended from a headband and covers the lower half of the face below the eyes.
Coin and Bead Embellishments: The veil is highly decorated. Authentic artisan dolls will feature tiny rows of shimmering gold coins, along with red, turquoise, or yellow plastic/glass beads sewn meticulously onto the fabric. Historically, these coins represented a woman’s personal wealth and dowry.
3. The Headscarf and Hair
The doll\'s head is wrapped in a black or brightly colored traditional headscarf (shemagh or tarha), which drapes down the back. Peeking out from underneath the headscarf are two long, intricately braided strands of dark yarn or thread, mimicking the classic braided hairstyles of Bedouin women.
4. Materials and Structure
Handmade Integrity: The body of the doll is crafted from soft cloth, linen, or sometimes a wooden/clay armature.
Facial Features: The eyes are a focal point, hand-painted with bold, dark lines to replicate the traditional application of natural kohl (eyeliner).
