Antique collection of four personal journals and ledgers belonging to J.R. Wharton, a Justice of the Peace in Guymon, Oklahoma. This archive spans 1890-1941, documenting life in Oklahoma Territory and early statehood. Covers 1909 when JR Wharton issued the arrest warrant in a high-profile territorial murder case involving William Westmoreland. Includes a hand-stitched 1890s travel diary and journal detailing his early struggles as a young man and three legal ledgers with notary entries, real estate records, and personal ephemera. Signatures, photos, newspaper clippings, checks, business cards and official stamps. A significant primary source for Western frontier history. Items show heavy foxing, staining, and some damage to pages as pictured.
