Beautiful and unusual antique Victorian-era EAPG condiment caster set in the Bulging Three Petal / Bulging Petal, also known as Quilt, pattern, dating to approximately the 1890s.
This striking set features three opaque light blue glass condiment vessels resting in a coordinating molded citron yellow-green glass base. Both the base and individual vessels feature the distinctive raised, puffy floral/petal design with small raised centers characteristic of the Bulging Petal pattern.
The contrasting blue and citron coloring makes this set particularly eye-catching and displays beautifully.
The set includes:
• Molded citron yellow-green glass three-vessel holder/base
• Three matching opaque light blue glass condiment vessels
• Three period metal shaker/condiment tops
• Tall dark metal carrying handle/caddy
These Victorian condiment sets were designed to hold table seasonings such as salt, pepper and mustard/condiment. The individual glass vessels have flat bases designed to nest into the three molded wells of the holder.
The Bulging Petal pattern is associated with Fostoria Shade & Lamp Co. and later Consolidated Lamp & Glass Co., with the pattern dating to the early 1890s. Because attribution of antique pattern glass can vary among references, this set is described based on documented examples of the pattern rather than a visible manufacturer’s mark.
COLOR:
The base appears pale citron/yellow-green in person, paired with opaque light aqua/powder blue condiment vessels. Colors may appear somewhat different depending on lighting and screen settings.
APPROXIMATE SIZE:
Base: approximately 6” across
Overall height including handle: approximately 9”
CONDITION:
Very nice antique condition for a set dating to the 1890s. Glass appears well preserved with no chips or cracks observed. Metal components show age-related patina, oxidation/tarnish and surface wear consistent with age and use.
The set currently has three perforated metal shaker tops. Period examples of this Bulging Three Petal condiment set are known with two shaker tops and a different mustard/condiment top. One of the tops on this set therefore appears to be a period replacement rather than the original mustard top. Please see photographs for the exact tops included.
The metal has not been aggressively polished in order to preserve its aged character.
Please review all photographs carefully, as they are considered part of the description and show condition, construction, coloring and measurements.
A wonderful surviving example of late-19th-century American pattern glass and an especially decorative piece for an EAPG, Victorian glass, antique shaker or condiment-set collection.
