This is an incredibly rare, museum-quality milestone of American printing history: an original 1896 "New Era No. 46x" playing card deck manufactured by The United States Playing Card Company.
First introduced at the turn of the 20th century, the New Era line was an experimental, high-end release designed to showcase artistic printing. This is the highly coveted "No. 46x" variant, which featured premium gold-gilded edges and delicate gold-bordered rectangles framing the pip fields on the number cards. The breathtaking Art Nouveau court cards and the elegant fashion-lady Joker were heavily inspired by late-19th-century European aesthetics, making this one of the most visually unique decks USPCC ever produced.
