A substantial turn-of-the-century military history set tracing major conflicts across more than two millennia, from the ancient Greek and Roman world through medieval and early modern warfare and into the battles of the 19th century. The books are profusely illustrated with detailed period engravings and battle scenes, making the set especially appealing as both a historical reference and an antique display set.
Volume One opens with the Battle of Marathon and includes Salamis, Syracuse, Arbela, Hannibal, the victory of Arminius over the Roman legions, the Sack of Rome, Attila, the Crusades, Hastings, Crecy/Poitiers/Agincourt, Orleans and the fall of Granada. The complete two-volume work continues through later European and American conflicts to the Spanish-American War era and Santiago.
Condition
Antique condition with age-related wear. The red cloth bindings show rubbing, fading, discoloration, surface wear and losses to portions of the decorative spine finish. Corners and spine ends show wear. Interior pages show age toning and scattered marks consistent with books more than 125 years old. I must say the inside pages of both books are in really nice shape. Specific damage includes insect damage to the spine and cover (but not inside pages) of Volume 2. The title page of Volume 1 is 3/4 torn from the spine. The spine on this book is soft, but stiff functions well.Details
