Rare early Parker Brothers “The Game of Sambo,” originally introduced in 1911 by Parker Brothers of Salem, Massachusetts.
This game belonged to my mother when she was a child and has remained in our family for many years. I recently researched it and found the game illustrated in the original 1911 Parker Brothers trade catalog, where it was introduced as Sambo, No. 554.
The game features a colorful lithographed wooden standing figure with a wooden pipe. Players toss the large cardboard rings and attempt to ring the pipe.
The set includes the original illustrated box, wooden target figure and pipe, colored throwing rings, original printed playing instructions, spinner, animal letter cards, and five lithographed wooden figures, as shown in the photographs.
Considering its age, the colorful lithographed graphics have survived remarkably well. The box and components do show considerable age-related wear, staining, edge wear and deterioration consistent with a game that is more than a century old. Please review all photographs carefully for condition and included pieces.
An unusual survivor from the early days of Parker Brothers and an interesting piece for collectors of antique games, early American toys, Parker Brothers memorabilia, or historical Americana.
